Monthly Product Digest: Latch Pods, ColabFold, SDK
Introducing Latch Pods, ColabFold, SDK map tasks, and celebrating our partnership with Funga
Hello, Latch community! 👋 We recently released a couple exciting updates that make it easier to store, process, and analyze your multi-omics data on Latch. Read on to learn more about how Latch can help accelerate your scientific discovery.
Product Updates
Latch Pods: A supercomputer in the cloud to supercharge your scientific discovery.
Our scientists often run 1000s of samples through pipelines, such as bulk or single-cell RNA-seq. Now they end up with result files that can be up to >10GBs, becoming extremely cumbersome to download and store locally.
With Latch Pods, now you can able to spin up a computer of any size, with up to 1TB in storage for data processing and downstream analyses.
Latch Pods come pre-installed with RStudio and Jupyter Labs, so scientists can avoid the headache of manually setting up dependencies. SSH access is offered out-of-the-box, making it easy to connect to your favorite IDE, such as PyCharm or VSCode.
SDK: A beautiful design and debugging interface for map tasks
Latch SDK comes with map task, which spins up several machines in parallel to perform the same task on a list of inputs.
As our SDK community battle-tested map tasks on thousands of files, we realized there should be a more elegant for both end users and developers to monitor statuses and errors for each mapped tasks. With the new map task design, you filter through successful and failed tasks, and directly export logs for every task.
ColabFold: Predict more protein structures at a fraction of the cost
For months, the Latch Platform has been the easiest way to run AlphaFold2. But a frequent ask we got was “can it go faster?” Now it can! ColabFold from Sergey O has 10x faster inference on small proteins and is now freely available
Check out this tweet by our talented engineer Aidan on how he significantly improved the performance of ColabFold!

Harnessing the Forest Fungal Microbiome to Fight Climate Change using LatchBio
Last month, we’ve had a great opportunity to collaborate with Funga whose mission is to harnesses forest fungal networks to address the climate crisis and improve microbial biodiversity.
Performing analysis on thousands of samples, however, requires 1) scalable cloud infrastructure for computation/storage, 2) pipeline versioning since this study will be taking place over the next several years and use several packages for analysis, and 3) a collaborative environment to host and share analysis.
In just one week, the Funga’s team successfully leveraged the Latch SDK to help them instantly gain access to scalable cloud infrastructure and centralize all of their analysis.
“Using Latch, the ability to define fine-grained compute resources using single Python decorators and autogenerate front-end interfaces using pure Python types …makes it 10X easier than if we were to use AWS or Google Cloud Services.” — Caylon Yates, Bioinformatician
…and that’s a wrap for this month’s product digest. See you next month! 🚀
